March Book Discussions

The Library will host four adult book discussions during the month of March: On March 10 at 7:00 p.m. The Ladies Night Out Book discussion Group will meet to review Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and Case Histories by Kate Atkinson. Wednesday March 12 at 2:00 p.m. The Daytime Book Discussion Group will meet to review Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. On Thursday, March 13 The Bookenders Book Discussion Group will meet to discuss The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers. On Thursday, March 27 The Science Fiction Book Discussion Group will discuss Dimension Of Miracles by Robert Sheckley. Books for each group are available at the Library’s Circulation Desk. New Afternoon Book Discussion! February 12 at 2:00 p.m.

Join us for lively monthly discussions of contemporary fiction and other notable books! In February, we will be discussing The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Trying to make sense of the horrors of World War II, Death relates the story of Liesel--a young German girl whose book-stealing and story-telling talents help sustain her family and the Jewish man they are hiding, as well as their neighbors. Old Bridge Public Library - General Book Discussion Group

On Thursday, October 24 at 7:00 p.m. The General Book Discussion Group will discuss The Language Instinct by Steven Pinker: Pinker, an expert on language and the mind explains everything you always wanted to know about language: how it works, how children learn it, how it changes, how the brain computes it, and how it evolved. Old Bridge Library: June 2012 Book Discussions

Monday, July 9 at 7:00 pm: The Ladies Night Out Book Discussion Group will discuss two books by Anita Shreve. All He Ever Wanted: Years after escaping from a hotel fire and encountering an elusive woman, whom he subsequently married and divorced, a man travels from New England to Florida by train and remembers the relationship. Testimony: A New England boarding school is rocked in the wake of a sex scandal in which participants were caught on videotape, a situation that derails the innocence and best intentions of students, parents, and others in life-shattering ways.

Thursday, July 12 at 6:30 pm: The Bookenders Book Discussion Group will talk about The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer. An unforgettable story of three brothers, of history and love, of marriage tested by disaster, of a Jewish family's struggle against annihilation, and of the dangerous power of art in a time of war. 

Thursday, July 19 at 7:00 pm: The Science Fiction Book Discussion Group will review Schild’s Ladder by Greg Egan. Twenty-thousand years in the future, a dangerous experiment in quantum physics creates an expanding vacuum in space that threatens to wipe out all humanity.

Book Discussion Groups

The Old Bridge Public Library invites new readers every month to join us for our Book Discussion Groups. All Programs are free and open to the entire community.

On Monday, June 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Central Library, The Ladies Night Out Book Discussion Group will review Midwives by Christopher A. Bohjalian. A seasoned midwife in rural Vermont faces the antagonism of the law, the hostility of traditional doctors, and the accusations of her own conscience. January Book Discussions

On Monday evening, January 10 at 7:00 p.m., The Ladies Night Out Book Discussion Group will meet to discuss The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Limited by racial divides in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi, three women, including an African-American maid, her sassy and unemployed friend, and a recently graduated white woman, team up for a clandestine project. On Thursday evening, January 20 at 7:00 p.m., The Science Fiction Book Discussion Group will be discussing The Philip K. Dick Reader. This anthology gathers twenty four classic science fiction stories, including "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," "Second Variety," "The Golden Man," and "The Last of the Masters." (Novelist)

Upcoming Book Discussions at the OB Central Library

September 23 @ 7:00 p.m. The Science Fiction Book Discussion Group will review The Dispossesed by Ursula Leguin.
A physicist from isolated Anarres travels to the mother planet, Urras, in hopes of dissolving the hatred that exists between them. (Novelist)
October 11th @ 7:00 p.m. The Ladies Night Out Book Discussion Group will be reviewing Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher.
Winter solstice--the shortest day of the year--represents darkness and also hope, renewal, and rebirth. Five very different people come together in this setting, ranging in age from teenagers to mid-sixties, each of whom must confront very different challenges or losses. (Novelist)
October 21 @ 7:00 p.m. The Science Book Discussion Group will review Ever Since Darwin by Stephen J. Gould.
The author reexamines Darwin's theory in light of the findings of modern evolutionary biology and shows the ways in which biological theories have been concocted to justify social ills. (Novelist)

February Book Discussions

Monday, February 8 @ 7:00 p.m. The Girls Night Out Book Discussion Group will review The Faith Club: a Muslim, a Christian, a Jew—Three Women Search for Understanding. Traces how three American women of different faiths worked together to understand one another while identifying the connections between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, during which they openly discussed the issues that divided them.

Thursday February 18th at 7:00 p.m., The Original Book Discussion Group will be discussing the March of Folly by Barbara Tuchman. Examines the irrationalities of governments through analysis of four crises of history--the fall of Troy, the Renaissance popes' own provocation of the Protestant secession, Britain's loss of the American colonies, and America's involvement in Vietnam.

Thursday, February 25th at 7:00 p.m., The Science Fiction Book Discussion Group will be discussing Stories Of Your Life And Other Stories by Ted Chiang. Presents a first collection of seven science fiction short stories, and includes an original tale, "Liking What You See: A Documentary" for this anthology.
