Old Bridge Library - Free Concert August 3

Friday, August 3 at 6:30 p.m. guitarist and pianist Matthew Fishteyn will present a free concert at the Old Bridge Public Library. Winner of the 2010 Wagner Young Musicians Competition, Matthew is sure to play something that will appeal to everybody. This concert was sponsored by the Friends of the Old Bridge Public Library.

Old Bridge Library - Free Movie: The Help

This Wednesday, July 25 at 6:30 p.m. The Library will be presenting a free movie showing of The Help: An aspiring author during the civil rights movement of the 1960s decides to write a book detailing the African-American maids' point of view on the white families for which they work, and the hardships they go through on a daily basis. Rated PG-13 146 min.

Friday, August 3rd@ 1:30PM Joyful Noise Starring: Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton. This film is the story of a small town choir out to win a national competition despite overwhelming odds. A story of faith and determination by the choir leaders and the young talent who give their all to win God's praise and beat the competition for the grand prize. Rated PG-13, 118 minutes, 2012.

Friday, August 10th @ 1:30PM Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Starring: Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law. Sherlock Holmes has always been the smartest man in the room... until now. There is a new criminal mastermind at large, Professor Moriarty, and not only is he Holmes' intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may actually give him an advantage over the renowned detective. Rated PG-13, 129 minutes.

Friday, August 17th @ 1:30PM Guarding Tess Starring: Shirley MacLaine and Nicolas Cage. Tess Carlisle (Shirley MacLaine) is a cantankerous, much loved ex-First Lady whose husband died in office nearly a decade ago. Now far removed from Washington, she directs her extraordinary intelligence to a battle of wills with Doug Chesnic (Nicolas Cage), a Secret Service agent with a strong code of honor whose sights are set higher than guarding a difficult woman in a sleepy outpost. The result is a funny and moving story of an unlikely friendship put to the ultimate test. Rated PG-13, 95 minutes, 1994.

Friday, August 24th @ 1:30PM The Way We Were Starring: Barbra Streisand, Robert Redford   Katie (Barbra Streisand) and Hubbell (Robert Redford) are immediately, albeit reluctantly, attracted to each other, but it takes years before they eventually marry. Old Bridge Library - It's not too late!

For fabulous prizes! This summer the adults in Old Bridge can join their own summer reading club “Between the Covers” which allows readers to review the books they read and vie for weekly prizes. It is simple to join! First, fill out a short registration form at the adult services desk. Then, members fill out a brief card for each book they read, each audiobook they listen to, or each adult program they attend. Old Bridge Library: Free Movie Friday: The Color Purple

Friday, July 13 at 1:30 p.m. Starring: Whoopi Goldberg and Danny Glover. Author Alice Walker’s intimate story of suffering, endurance, and triumph is set in early 20th century rural South. Celie Johnson (Whoopi Goldberg) is a browbeaten, much abused, nearly illiterate black farm girl who, over the course of 40 years grows into a woman of self-assurance and wit, a  woman with her own dreams and identity. Rated PG, 155 minutes, 1985.

Old Bridge Library: June 2012 Book Discussions

Monday, July 9 at 7:00 pm: The Ladies Night Out Book Discussion Group will discuss two books by Anita Shreve. All He Ever Wanted: Years after escaping from a hotel fire and encountering an elusive woman, whom he subsequently married and divorced, a man travels from New England to Florida by train and remembers the relationship. Testimony: A New England boarding school is rocked in the wake of a sex scandal in which participants were caught on videotape, a situation that derails the innocence and best intentions of students, parents, and others in life-shattering ways.

Thursday, July 12 at 6:30 pm: The Bookenders Book Discussion Group will talk about The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer. An unforgettable story of three brothers, of history and love, of marriage tested by disaster, of a Jewish family's struggle against annihilation, and of the dangerous power of art in a time of war. 

Thursday, July 19 at 7:00 pm: The Science Fiction Book Discussion Group will review Schild’s Ladder by Greg Egan. Twenty-thousand years in the future, a dangerous experiment in quantum physics creates an expanding vacuum in space that threatens to wipe out all humanity.
